Bagnalls Gives the Queen Bee Rollercoaster a Makeover
01 August 2024
Bagnalls recently repainted the Queen Bee rollercoaster ride at Botton’s Pleasure Beach in Skegness. Located on the east coast, the park is subject to the corrosive impact of airborne salts – therefore, the rollercoaster required a thorough overhaul of its coatings to provide sufficient protection against the elements.
We completed work on the steelwork supports, track and balustrading at the entranceway. The programme took six weeks to complete, while the park was closed to visitors.
The restoration process began with a high-pressure jet wash of the steelwork and track to remove all loose and flaking material. The areas were then sanded down before the application of a full Tikkurila specification.
Initial areas were spot-primed, prior to a full application of Tikkurila Temabond ST300 two-pack primer on all prepped or bare surfaces. We then applied one layer of Tikkurila Temacoat RM40 two-pack intermediate coat, followed by a finish coat of Tikkurila Temadur 50 two-pack in the required colours of pink, purple and yellow to match the existing colour scheme.
As the project took place out of season, wet weather was an issue – but our team managed to complete all work to specification and in a safe manner by using a Mobile Elevating Work Platform (MEWP), mobile tower and ladder access.
On completion of the project, the customer commented, “We are very pleased with the work carried out by Bagnalls.” The cost of the painting works undertaken by us, as a specialist painting contractor, proved to be good value for money for the customer as it allowed their own engineers to carry out more mechanical work and repairs to rides across the rest of the park.
